Here is a quick update on our Co-founder, Marcela Mota, and how she's been dealing with Pandemic 2020. As an International Yoga Teacher, Marcela spent her past years travelling around the world teaching Yoga Teacher Trainings and has to date certified over 300 Yoga Teachers from all corners of the globe.
How is this Pandemic, and most specifically, this extended time of traveling restrictions impacting your life?
So it turns out that most of the world will not be opening before next year. To be honest, part of that news came as a relief to me, since I have been longing for a little bit more stability and routine in my life, especially with a highly energetic 2 year old toddler attached to my being at all hours of the day and night. So the fact that I don’t need to pack my whole life up, again, and leave to Asia to teach my yearly Yoga Teacher Trainings, is not all bad.
But, of course, like everything, there is another side to the story. First, I absolutely LOVE teaching Yoga Teacher Trainings, sharing my gifts with the world, being in service, and being aligned with my bigger purpose. So, of course, having all 3 trainings cancelled is not so cool and leaves a big whole in my spirit.
Where are you settling in these days when travel is not allowed and how is that working out for you?
Well, luckily my husband has a magical community in the countryside of Denmark where we have been since April. It has been truly lovely, nourishing and soothing for the nervous system.
But the fact that I’m no longer going to the tropics anytime soon, means that I will be staying in DENMARK through the WINTER!! Winter? Did anyone say Winter?
I’m from Brazil… I don’t do winters. Growing up, all year around was summer….I was always at the beach, hanging out with friends outdoors, barbeques, parties everywhere and endless road trips to infinite amount of pristine beaches all over the country. So as far as I knew, seasons were mainly a concept, a label, but little did it affect me, my life and my daily activities.
How do you cope with the idea of a really cold winter in Denmark this year?
While studying Chinese Medicine and being married to a Chinese Medicine Doctor, has taught me the concept of the 5 Elements of Nature. According to this ancient wisdom there are 5 elements, phases and/or cycles within all things, including ourselves. Each of these Elements are associated with different seasons, organs, emotions, imbalances and tendencies…. One who lives in accordance and harmony with these rhythms live healthy, happy and fulfilled lives.
Do you mean you like the winter?
I mean that each season brings a different invitation. Winter is associated with the Water Element and is a deeply nourishing Yin time that gives us the needed energy, vision, and purpose with which to emerge into Spring – a season of growth and fresh starts. During winter there is an energetic predisposition of retraction, as our energy, called Qi by the Chinese, flows more deeply inside us, There is a depth to the season that invites us to connect with the core of our being and untouched emotions.
What is your recommendation to prepare for the winter season?
In preparation for the winter, our focus should turn to strengthening the water element’s organ system pair, the Kidneys and Urinary Bladder. We can achieve that through Yin Yoga Practice, and by practicing that which we observe in nature: stillness and conservation.
For those who are in Switzerland, where the winter is quite severe, and would like to deepen your knowledge on this subject, we will be holding “Embrace the Winter: Yin Yoga & Chinese Medicine Weekend Workshop”. Where combining this 2 ancient practices we will explore and prepare body, mind and spirit for the dark, yet magical and healing, days of Winter.
